HERE'S THE PROBLEM

  • Dirty streets have become a health hazard to residents

  • Many of the major streets in Boyle Heights haven't had any form of cleaning in 40 years

  • Illegal dumping is a huge fire hazard - major fires have already occurred

  • Trash piles are a breeding ground for vermin and disease - and they are everywhere

  • Unequal Covid impact - This predominantly Latino neighborhood has the highest recorded tally of covid cases in any region in the county

  • Previous efforts have fallen short - residents have an ongoing petition to get street sweeping

HERE'S THE SOLUTION

Hope LA has developed a comprehensive, street by street cleaning plan

We have broken down the Boyle Heights area into 52 different segments. Each segment will be worked on for one week, so there will be a total of 52 weeks of work (see map). The scope of work is as follows:

  • Clean ALL streets, alleys, and public spaces of the following:

    • Wastewater - all grease, oil, sludges, chemicals, wash water, waste detergents and dirty water.

    • Solid Waste - garbage, sludge, and refuse found in industrial and commercial locations including glass and ceramics, plastic waste, paper waste, and metals and tins.

    • Organic waste - rotten meat, garden and food waste, commonly found around homes, restaurants, parks and homeless encampments.

    • Hazardous waste - includes flammable, corrosive, toxic and reactive materials that pose a significant or potential threat to our environment.

    • Recycle Waste - all discarded items like metals, furniture, organic waste that can be recycled will be recycled.

  • Professionally COVID clean ALL public surfaces

    • Wash, disinfect and sanitize all surfaces that are open to the public.

    • High touch surfaces made of plastic or metal, such as grab bars, play structures, and railings will be cleaned routinely.

    • Pick up discarded masks, clothes, bottles and other trash while wearing PPE for all tasks in the cleaning process, including handling trash.

  • Deploy multiple ground crews to pick up and dispose trash where city cleaning trucks do not have access

The Hope LA Boyle Heights Urgent Covid Cleaning Plan aligns with residents' requests, LA City Council’s Clean Up Green Up measure, and CDC guidelines.

Hope LA Foundation has come up with a detailed plan to professionally clean every street and public space in Boyle Heights, and we will be sending this plan to the city of LA for approval. If you would like more information or would like to read the detailed proposal, please contact us.

Our goal is to eventually do this type of cleanup for every city and neighborhood in Los Angeles County.
